The bedroom organization is the number one place we get asked questions about. Check out the Imagine It Done Guide to Mattresses. We've included our favorite mattresses and how to care for them properly.
Our favorite mattress brands
Our number one tip is to not buy mattresses that are too deep. You need to buy linens that will be the perfect fit for the mattress. If the mattress is too deep, it is difficult in making the bed when linens are so deep. If you want a fluffy pillow top you can always add that as an extra item with elastic straps so it ca be removed for washing.
We constantly are being asked about our preferred mattress brands. Here are our top three brands that are comfortable and affordable.
Casper
Casper is a universal mattress that comes in a variety of prices based on the support you are looking for. Their most popular mattress is The Casper, which starts at $595. All of the options come with a 10-year warranty, made in America, and are free from harmful chemicals.
Tuft & Needle
Tuft & Needle uses polyurethane foam for its materials, which is as comfortable and durable as foam at a much more affordable price. Their mattresses offer support and pressure relief and range from twin to California King.
Avocado Green Mattress
Despite the name, Avocado Green Mattress is not made of avocados, but they are vegan and natural based on your preference. They use GOTS certified cotton and eco-friendly materials. They also offer both mattresses and mattress tops if you want to simply add some comfort to your bed without going all out.
How to care for your mattress
According to Tuft & Needle, sleeping in the same spot on your mattress each night can create pressure on the springs of your mattress. If you have a traditional innerspring mattress, you should be flipping it every 3-6 months.
If you have a foam mattress you should defer to their tips for your specific mattress care. Typically, mattresses should last you from 7-10 years in good condition.
Be sure to protect your mattress with bed bug protectors, especially if you live in a big city. We recommend this box spring protector from SafeGuard and this mattress protector from Nectar. Both items are waterproof, dust mite proof, bed bug proof, and hypoallergenic.
How to clean your mattress
Did you know you should be cleaning your mattress? The first step is to wash your sheets at least every other week. You should consider investing in a good mattress vacuum to suck up any allergens and dead skin. Dyson has a great vacuum that penetrates into the mattress. You can also use sprays such as this one from Simple Solution to remove stains and odors, as well as baking soda with water.
If you’re located in NYC, there are a variety of services that will clean your mattress for you. Mattress Cleaning Service is professional cleaners that come to your apartment and use an eco-friendly method of cleaning to remove stains, odors, allergens, viruses, and more. Clean NYC offers a mattress cleaning service as well.
