Maximizing Closet Space: Organizing Lots of Stuff in Small Spaces

A well-organized closet with neatly arranged items, showcasing effective techniques for organizing and maximizing storage space.

This is from a Q & A with Lisa about closet organization.

When it comes to organizing a closet, what is the first move you advise clients to make? Is it decluttering or re-evaluating your wardrobe?

When it comes to organizing a closet the first step I advise clients to make is to begin with an edit - sorting through each and every item you have and deciding if it still has a place in your life. This is in fact what we consider the declutter and evaluation process. Take everything out, categorize by season, design and purpose in order to breeze through the process. Make piles for keep, toss, give away, donate, and consign.

Are there any particular products you believe can help people organize their closets? What are they and how do they help?

There are many products we suggest, helping people organize their closets and to stay organized. All the same hangers, labeled bins, drawer dividers, shelf dividers, shelf risers, shoe racks, stacking acrylic drawers, valet rods, step ladder. Each one of these products helps to get and stay organized by keeping your stuff contained, visible, tidy and curated.

Why is it important to have an organized closet?

It is important to have an organized closet for your peace of mind, mental wellness, and day to day productivity. With organizational systems, you save time, energy, and dollars. No more wasted moments looking for your favorite slacks and sweaters. When you see your stuff, you don’t carelessly duplicate, which leads to no more impulsive purchases. Order in your home brings on a sense of clarity, serenity, and happiness. It’s as if you have hit reset! An organized space is an organized mind is an organized life!

What are some mistakes people make when it comes to organizing their closet?

The biggest mistake people make in organizing their closet is to ignore the edit, commonly known as the decluttering process. This is the first and most crucial step for success. Secondly, often people will keep their random, dusty, old, twisted wire hangers to save money. For order, grace and efficiency, upgrade the hanger. It is unequivocally the #1 most important accessory. If you can, purchase all new and streamlined hangers to elevate the overall look of the closet and give you peace of mind. Organization is all about time management and efficiency, These changes will create a sense of peace and bring love into your home.

Ignoring the edit, often called the decluttering process, is the most frequent slope game error individuals do while arranging their wardrobe.
